Atlantic Harbor of Refuge, Carteret County, North Carolina Navigation
The Atlantic Harbor of Refuge site is at Atlantic, North Carolina, a small town in eastern Carteret County about 25 miles northeast of Morehead City. The project will modify the existing Federal project by providing an additional channel and a breakwater. The project will provide a harbor of refuge for vessels during inclement weather. Dredged material will be used to build a breakwater, with excess material disposed of in open water if the material is found suitable for that type of disposal. A small marsh area will be converted into a 180-foot by 600-foot basin. During dredging operations, turbidities will be increased in the immediate sound area.
