Modelling the Failure of Coastal Dykes during Earthquakes
A series of dynamic centrifuge model tests have been carried out to investigate the earthquake stability of coastal dykes on poor foundations. Settlement, sliding and cracking of strongly constructed dykes was observed. Analyses are presented to describe the pattern of settlement and to predict the onset of sliding. Mechanisms of fracture are shown to be linked to differential settlement within the foundation.
