Fire Tests in Ventilated Rooms: Detection of Cable-Tray and Exposure Fires
The purpose of this work was to assess the response of typical commercial smoke detectors (ionization and photoelectric types) to fires in ventilated rooms representative of utility environments. Detector response has been evaluated for a number of combustibles including both flaming and nonflaming cables and exposure fires. Detector response relationships are developed as a function of the following parameters: (1) the smoke transit time; (2) a detection time factor; (3) a detector sensitivity factor; (4) a ventilation factor; and (5) the nondimensional detector spacing. In addition, an example of smoke detector spacing requirements is given based upon the results of cable tray fire tests in a ventilated environment. (ERA citation 08:023420)
