Passive solar residential buildings in Italy: Results of a national survey
Residential passive solar buildings in Italy account for more than 78% of the total number (of passive solar buildings), 14% of which are detached houses and 64% are multi-family buildings, with a total volume of 450.000 cubic meters, or more than 1.700 apartments. The paper presents the final results of an exhaustive survey conducted by the Italian Commission for Nuclear and Alternative Energy Sources (ENEA) on passive solar architecture in Italy. The paper focuses on the architectural and technical problems related to the use of passive solar features in rather large residential buildings, chosen among the most significant Italian passive solar building projects. The technical aspects of some of the most interesting buildings using passive solar technologies for space heating, in addition to solar collectors for domestic hot water, are described in detail.
