Thermal Effects in Concrete Bridge Superstructures
The report investigates, the effect of thermally induced strains on concrete bridges. A brief discussion of the mechanisms of heat transfer as they relate to bridge structures is included. A summary of a review of the technical literature on thermal effects in concrete bridge superstructures includes a discussion of the current state of the art related to the thermal properties of concrete, mean effective bridge temperatures, temperature differentials within a bridge, analysis of thermal response, and available climatic information. The current design provisions of several countries are summarized and compared with design practices in the United States.
