An Archeological Survey of Two Areas Under Consideration for Proposed Boundary Revisions in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area: The Vicinities of Katherine Landing and Bullhead City
Proposed boundary consolidation activities in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area required an archeological survey of the land being considered for exchange. From January 17 to March 8, 1977, a survey totaling 10,560 acres in two areas--Bullhead and Katherine--was conducted. A total of 140 sites was recorded, consisting of historic claim markers, a mining town, lithic scatters, rock-outlined circles, pot breaks, a rock shelter, trails, and petroglyphs. These cultural resources indicate that the area was used from the San Dieguito period (5000 BC) to historic mining times. Primary use of the Bullhead area was stone quarrying and travel between mountains and river. The Katherine area reflected historic mining activities.
