Study of Embankment Settlement and Stability
The design selected for stabilizing the embankment foundation required pore pressure measurements within the foundation soil during construction. In addition to pore pressure, the researchers measured settlement and horizontal displacements. Foundation soil samples were also taken and tested for shear strength. Generally, the strength of the foundation soil increased with consolidation and the engineers were able to maintain a stable condition by controlling the rate of embankment construction. The predicted amount of settlement (up to 2.75 feet) agreed closely with that measured. (Author)
