Depth and Length Effect on the Tensile Strength of SA Pine Structural Timber
Strength tests done in Canada on structural timber showed a strong relationship between strength and length and between strength and depth. Bending tests on SA Pine showed that changing the length of a board has a greater effect than changing the depth of the board. Tests were done in tension to determine the depth and length effect on the strength of SA Pine structural timber. Although the results show a depth effect, this appears to be overridden by the influence on an increased number of knots in wider sections. From the available data it appears that timber size has an effect on the Modulus of Elasticity (E-flat). There also appears to be some length effect, but this cannot be quantified with the available data.
