Proposed New Community of Soul City, Warren County, North Carolina
The report contains the draft environmental statement on the proposed Soul City New Community. The proposed new community will occupy 5,180 acres in Warren County, North Carolina, about 9 miles from Henderson, and 45 miles from the Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area, and about 10 miles below the Virginia border. The new community is projected to attain a population of about 44,000 by 1990. The area surrounding the site is predominantly rural and is characterized by a declining agricultural economy. Ground transportation (rail and highway) makes Soul City easily accessible to east and northeast regions of the nation. Water and sewerage services will be provided by the Kerr Lake Utility Company, Inc. drawing water from Kerr Lake, a large nearby reservoir. The planned community development includes a range of public, civic and cultural facilities, with some services being provided initially by Warren County. It is expected that the city will be incorporated in 1975. (Author)
