This manual is intended to provide engineering and technical personnel at all levels of Government and private engineering organizations with sound, comprehensive, guidelines and procedures for the examination and evaluation of public and private dams. The general topics discussed are (1) Reclamation policy; (2) principles and concepts; (3) philosophy of evaluation; (4) causes of failure; (5) team makeup, training and responsibility, (6) preparing and updating a Data Book; (7) review of design, construction, and operation; (8) onsite examinations; (9) report formats; (10) Data Book format; (11) analysis guidelines; and (12) examination checklists. A selected bibliography on the subject of dam safety is provided in Chapter X.
