Progress Report on Chicago High-Rise Requirements
This proposed Chicago building code for reducing the life-safety hazard in tall buildings is based on a choice between compartmentation and automatic sprinklers. Exceptions are made for mercantile, industrial, institutional, and storage high-rise buildings, all of which must be sprinklered. Choice between compartmentation and sprinklers allows for design flexibility. A continuously manned central control station is required for all buildings over 400 feet. A smoke control system is required in all buildings. Provisions are being made for emergency roof rescue by helicopters. A clear space of 50 feet in diameter is suggested on the top of high buildings. (Copyright (c) 1974, Society of Fire Protection Engineers, Boston, Mass.)
