Characterization and Use of Shear Stress-Strain Relations for Airfield Subgrade and Base Course Materials
The shear stress-strain relation for soils, appropriate to the development of an airfield pavement evaluation system by the U.S. Air Force, has been studied. Special equipment was developed and used to measure the shear stress-strain relation for two soils, a silty sand and a silty clay. Samples of the soils were compacted to various densities, with different percents saturation, and were tested over an extreme range of strain levels, for up to 1000 cycles of loading, and for rates of loading differing by a factor of approximately 100. Accurate measurements of modulus were made for strain levels as small as .00001 in/in and as large as the strain corresponding to about 80 percent of the strength of the soil. (Author)
