Design of Terminals for Rigid Pavements to Control End Movements: State of the Art
One of the inherent problems associated with the use of Portland cement concrete pavements, commonly referred to as rigid pavements, is the structural damage caused by longitudinal movement due to variation in temperature or moisture conditions. Damage will occur where the pavement abuts a bridge or another pavement section. In 1973 the Transportation Research Board Committee on Rigid Pavement Design undertook the task of assembling information on the problem of controlling longitudinal pavement movement. This publication is a state-of-the-art report prepared from a review of the literature and from current practices as determined by means of a questionnaire circulated to the 50 states. It includes a discussion of the principal factors that affect pavement movement, a summary of basic concepts of terminal design, and the results of the questionnaire, including a summary of terminal treatments being used, their construction and maintenance costs, and their performance.
