Annual Housing Survey: 1983. Housing Characteristics for Selected Metropolitan Areas: St. Louis, Missouri-Illinois, Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area
This report presents statistics on housing and household characteristics for the St. Louis Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area (SMSA), based on data collected from a sample of about 4,250 housing units between April and December 1983. The document consists of five parts: (1) statistics on general housing characteristics with comparisons to 1980, 1976, and 1970; (2) indicators of housing and neighborhood quality such as services available, structural deficiencies, road conditions, and owner versus renter occupied; (3) financial characteristics -- income, property value, rent paid; (4) characteristics of recent mover households; and (5) financial characteristics cross- indexed by indicators of housing and neighborhood quality. All sections provide breakdowns on housing units with black householders and householders of Spanish origin. The August estimate of total housing units for the St. Louis SMSA is 897,000, a net gain of 12,300 over the 1980 estimate. This reflects 12,300 units added to the inventory through new construction, minus 19,800 units lost to the inventory, plus 10,000 unspecified units that entered the inventory. Approximately 2 percent of the total housing stock in the St. Louis SMSA was constructed since 1980, and all new construction occured in the suburbs. During this 3-year period, the proportion of the housing inventory lost was 4 percent for the central city and 2 percent for the suburbs.
