Low-Cost Shoreline Protection in Massachusetts
Sand-filled fabric bags have been used successfully for low-cost, temporary shoreline protection in many areas of the country. The effective application of these bags was investigated at several sites in Massachusetts. A temporary groin was constructed for investigations prior to a planned large-scale beach nourishment program. The bags were also used as toe protection at a bulkhead and as a low-cost revetment. Finally, there was an extensive investigation of the 'perched beach' concept using bags as sills.
