Historic Structure Report: Ocmulgee National Monument Visitor Center
The 1939 advent of construction of the Visitor Center at Ocmulgee National Monument near Macon, Georgia was a watershed event for the National Park Service, though the significance of the event was not widely recognized at that moment. The design of this building was a radical departure from the Park Service buildings previously constructed. Until the Ocmulgee building, the agency's park facilities were uniformly traditional in architectural expression. These new buildings were often rustic, in acknowledgement of the natural character of the park.
