Behavior of Reinforced Concrete Under Variable Elevated Temperatures
Results of a pilot study on the behavior of reinforced concrete exposed to elevated temperatures are reported. A series of experiments was conducted in which the thermal and structural responses of unreinforced and reinforced concrete prisms to various combinations of heating and axial compression loading cycles were measured. Exposures of up to 600F. (316C.) were studied using equipment developed for this experimental program. Recently developed computer programs used to simulate the experiments mathematically; these numerical solutions and the results of the experimental program are compared. Of particular interest was the validity of the mathematical models used in the computer programs to represent heat conduction and concrete cracking and crack closing due to thermal effects and axial compression.
