This report provides basic statistical information on the consumption of, and expenditures for, energy in commercial buildings and their energy-related characteristics. This survey is the only source of national-level data on both commercial building characteristics and energy consumption. This report covers the physical and operating characteristics that affect energy use for the commercial building stock. A second report, to be released later, will cover energy consumption and expenditures. This report presents descriptions of commercial buildings at the national and Census region levels in terms of the following characteristics: building use, building size, location, energy sources, energy end uses, conservation features, heating, cooling, and lighting equipment, percent of floorspace heated, cooled, or lit, and building structure. 7 figs., 117 tabs.
