Descriptors for Granular Bottom Sediments to be Dredged
Descriptors typifying the dredgeability of granular soils are presented. The descriptors are related to the effective shear strength of the soil. They account for the effective angle of internal friction and relative permeability; that is, the ability of the soil to dissipate excess pore-water pressures developing during dredge cutting. A step-by-step procedure to determine the descriptors is detailed. The procedure includes field tests such as the estimation of in-situ density and either the Standard Penetration Test or the Cone Penetrometer Test. It also includes simple laboratory procedures, some of which were modified to deal with silty soils. It is recommended to confirm the descriptor, which signifies the difficulty associated with the dredging of a particular site, using one of two possible supplemental approaches. The reliability of the descriptor largely depends on the extent of the site investigation and the subsequent characterization of the soils. Classification, Dredgeability, Granular, Cohesionless, Dredging, Relative density, Descriptors, Excavation, Soil sediments.
