Plasticity and Water Retentivity of Hydrated Limes for Structural Purposes
Workability characteristics imparted to plasters and mortars by hydrated lime are of importance to the plasterer and to the mason. Emley plasticity values were determined for putties prepared from 65 hydrated limes of the various types, after soaking them for 30 minutes and for 1 day. Water-retentivity values, defined as the ratio of the flow after suction to the flow before suction, were obtained for lime-sand mortars prepared in the proportions of 1:3 by weight, 1:3 by volume, and 1:3 by volume using lime putty aged overnight. Results are discussed with relation to the improvement of specifications.
