Effective Width of Continuous Composite Beams
The rigorous behavior of continuous composite systems consisting of steel girders and a concrete slab attached by a shear connection is examined in the elastic range. Numerical solutions for stresses and deflections are obtained for a wide range of variables including slab panel proportions, relative stiffness of girder, type of loading and boundary conditions. Some of the shortcomings of the concept of effective width in practical design are examined.
