Compaction of Asphalt Concrete Pavements
The research project was initiated in order to study the compaction of asphalt concrete pavements. It was determined that adequate densities were not being obtained with the California Standard Specifications and new Standard Special Provisions were written. A rolling procedure was developed for both thick-lift and thin-lift construction. Measurements were made of recently constructed pavements to determine the riding qualities associated with the various construction methods using different lift thicknesses. Research was also conducted on the use of nuclear gages to determine asphalt concrete densities and a method was written for the use of nuclear gages in conjunction with the qualification of rollers.
