Spillway and Sluices, Red Rock Dam, Des Moines River, Iowa: Hydraulic Model Investigation
Red Rock Dam will be a rolled-fill earth embankment with a maximum height of 112 ft and length of 6260 ft. Flow regulation will be provided by an ogee spillway consisting of five 41-ft-wide bays and 14 sluices 5 ft wide by 9 ft high. The design flood, 362,000 cfs, will be passed by combined flow with the reservoir at elevation 791.3 (55.3-ft head), the sluices discharging 32,000 cfs and the spillway 330,000 cfs. The spillway and sluices were studied on two models (a 1:50-scale general model of the spillway and a 1:16-scale section model of the sluice outlet) to evaluate the performance of the various elements of the structure with particular emphasis on determination of the maximum elevation of the stilling basin apron and minimum height of the training walls. Studies were also conducted to determine pressure conditions at the sluice outlet portals and the effect of spillway flow on the capcity of the sluices. (Author)
