A finite element program was developed which can be used in general to solve the coupled problem of flow through an elastic solid. The program generates histories of stresses, pore pressures and displacements of plane strain systems under application of arbitrary loads. It is therefore useful for determination of settlement and consolidation under rigid and flexible strip footings as well as under embankments built on saturated soils. As is typical in finite element procedures, arbitrary geometrical configuration and considerable non-homogeneity can be allowed for. (Author)
