Design Studies on Highway Bridge Decking and Luminaire Supports: January 1969-June 1970
A preliminary survey of the use of concrete-polymer materials for luminaire support structures has been completed and a study of highway bridge decking has been started. These studies were carried out in the period January, 1969 to June, 1970. A summary of the effort and the pertinent results are given in this report. The impregnation of concrete with monomer followed by treatment of the monomer with radiation originated with a suggestion by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) to the Division of Isotopes Development of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission in 1965. Results of these initial exploratory experiments, completed early in 1967, were that the compressive strength was increased by a factor of 2 to 2.4, the absorption was decreased 80 to 98%, and the hardness was increased by a factor of 1.4 to 1.9.
