Influence of Mineral Fines on Aging of Asphalt and Related Studies
A literature survey showed that very little is known about the varied effects of mineral fines on asphalt cement used in pavements. To better understand these effects, a variety of petrologically different fine aggregates (some obtained from a prior study) were tested for a spectrum of characteristics and behavior. The surface area, particle-size distribution, mineral components, chemical analysis, and plastic properties were determined. Observations and photographs were made with a scanning electron microscope. Each mineral fine type was mixed with a reference asphalt cement, given a simulated aging exposure, weatherometer tests, tensile, shear, and adhesion evaluations. Mineral fines examined had fractured, angular, and irregular shapes with varying surface areas and particle size distributions, and these properties are shown to provide stability to the pavement.
