Firefighters' Breathing Apparatus: Testing Belt Radiant Heat Resistance and Corrosion Resistance
The effects of radiant heat on the belts of self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) used by firefighters were studied. Different belts were tested at three radiant heat intensities, 0.45 watts per cubic centimeter (w/sq cm), 0.92w/sq cm and 1.16w/sq cm. Belt length and stiffness were determined after exposure. SCBA were tested in a salt spray chamber for 10 days to determine corrosion resistance. All of the SCBA models subjected to salt spray showed considerable visual corrosion and functional deterioration. The authors identified belts appropriate for firefighting. The author states that these data will help NIOSH establish test methods and performance criteria for SCBA.
