Mud Gulch Flood Prevention Project Measure, Sangre de Cristo RC and D Project, Colorado
The Mud Gulch Flood Prevention Project lies approximately five miles northeast of Canon City, Colorado. The project consists of a single purpose flood retention dam. Mud Gulch is an intermittent stream, tributary to the Arkansas River. The flood retention dam is located upstream from U.S. Highway 50. The watershed area above the dam is 2.3 square miles. The dam will be compacted earth fill 60' above the present stream bed with a crest length of 415 feet and 14 feet wide on top. Flood damage to 18 homes, four businesses, county and state highway, and 273 acres of agricultural land will be virtually eliminated. Water quality will be improved through reduced channel degradation and sediment loads. Approximately 20 acres of rangeland will be disturbed to construct the dam and spillway. Approximately 30 acres of rangeland will be in the flood retarding pool and subject to temporary flooding during flood periods.
