Health Hazard Evaluation Report No. GHETA 82-253-1301, West Virginia University Medical Center, Morgantown, West Virginia
To investigate employee exposure to asphalt fumes during a re-roofing project at the University Medical Center, environmental sampling was conducted on May 18, 1982, to evaluate asphalt fumes and some of its fractions. Only area samples were collected. These were: fluoranthene (0.00023 mg/ cu m), pyrene (0.00134 mg/cu m), and chrysene (0.00053 mg/cu m). While these were detected, there is no specific recommended standard for aromatic hydrocarbons. A significant asphalt fume health hazard did not exist for the employees of the University Medical Center. Recommendations for minimizing contamination of indoor work areas during future re-roofing projects are found in the report.
