Abstract

The investigation evaluated the consequences for road users, the environment and the road administrator when salt is not used for deicing of roads during winter time. The corrosion rate of test specimens made of ordinary car steel was determined during exposure on vehicles driven in regular traffic. The influence of atmospheric corrosion was determined by simultaneous exposure of the same kind of test specimens at field stations within each of these regions. The test specimens used were either unprotected, or applied with a temporary corrosion protection agent or an organic coating for corrosion protection. The results from the mobile exposures indicated that the corrosion was 30% higher during this period.
