Physical Property Data on Coal Waste Embankment Materials
Engineering design criteria for coal refuse embankments have been totally lacking and have created hazardous impoundment structures in coal mining areas. A necessary first step to develop design criteria is the determination of basic representative physical property data on the materials that constitute typical refuse embankments. An extensive field and laboratory program was undertaken by the U.S. Bureau of Mines Spokane Mining Research Center. Much physical property data was generated. Additional petrographic analysis and large scale triaxial compression testing was performed by others. The data presented here should be extremely valuable in establishing design parameters for coal refuse embankments.
