Civil Infrastructure Systems Research: Strategic Issues
The United States infrastructure is decaying because of age, deterioration, misuse, lack of repair and, in some cases, because it was not designed for current demand. To meet the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century, the United States must address and solve the difficult technical problems and social issues related to rebuilding its aging infrastructure and to constructing new facilities to meet future demands. The National Science Foundation (NSF) has an opportunity to become an instrument of change in this area of national importance. The report recommends that NSF undertake a major new initiative in civil infrastructure systems research. The report makes the case for such an initiative and proposes an action plan.
