Field and laboratory tests were performed on 20 bridge approaches in Colorado in order to identify the contributing factors associated with the settlement of bridge approaches. An analysis of the data obtained revealed that the approaches settled as a result of consolidation within an approach embankment and foundation, poor compaction of backfill and embankment material, poor drainage, erosion of soil at the abutment face and combination of these factors. The research study has demonstrated that there are definite problems associated with the design and construction of some older bridge approaches in Colorado. However, progress has been made to alleviate the problem in Colorado by using Class I structural backfill, extending wings along the roadway's shoulder and using approach slabs.
