Microanisotropy of Water-Saturated Sands
Current practice is to determine the density of water-saturated sand, used for the filling of sand and rock-earth dams, by electrical methods based on the relationship between the electrical resistivity of sand, and its porosity. This relationship is determined in the laboratory with special 'calibration' devices. It is thereby assumed that water-saturated sand has isotropic conductivity properties. In fact, the electrical conductivity of water-saturated sand departs from isotropy because of its layer-type structure (macroanisotropy), and differences in the location of its component particles (microanisotropy). IN THIS ARTICLE, THE MICROANISOTROPY OF WATER-SATURATED SAND IS DISCUSSED, WITH A VIEW TO FINDING WAYS OF INCREASING THE ACCURACY OF ELECTRICAL METHODS, USED IN DETERMINING THE DENSITY OF WATER=SATURATED SAND.
