Behavior of Sodium Fires and Suitable Protecting Systems
The course of sodium fires of different types has been investigated. The studies were directed to sodium area conflagrations and suitable protection systems to confine such fires. Experiments were performed in a closed hall approximately 8 m long x 8 m wide. The area conflagrations were executed in steel pans 0.18 to 4.5 sq cm. Sodium quantities were between 10 to 200 liter at temperatures between 400 and 820 C. Spray fires and fires at isolated pipes were also studied. The temperatures, reaction rates, and the production of aerosols were measured. Tests with extinguishing powder were executed during some fires. The fires were monitored by series of slides and films. (Author)
