Long-Term Durability of Cold Weather Concrete: Phase 2
The following report details research performed as part of an investigation into the long-term durability and early age behavior of concrete placed in freezing conditions. This concrete is protected from the damaging effects of early age freezing through the use of off -the-shelf additives, a technique that the Engineer Research and Development Center, Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (ECDC-CRREL) has used for several decades. The primary objectives of this study are to better determine the effects of these additives on the early age performance of concrete, and to assess the effects of this technology on long-term durability of concrete in cold climates. These objectives were set to enhance the transfer ability of additive -based freeze protection for concrete to both civil and military applications. This will be accomplished via improvements to the user friendliness and economy of the technology, and validation of the durability of the resulting product.
