The climatic conditions have been studied for growth of molds on commercially produced timber. The object has been to find factors related to the storage of timber which may influence later infections in construction. Mold-infected houses have a musty odor originating from mold growth, and the sometimes high spore production makes living unhealthy in such buildings. The infections appear on organic building material, like wood, when it is exposed to high humidity. At a relative humidity of 85%, some wooden material gets moldy, others not. This difference in appearance of mold infections may depend on the environmental conditions at the sawmills where the wood was stored before it was used in construction. The results indicate that initial mold infections during the storage period increase the susceptibility to mold growth.
