Asphaltic Plug-Type Expansion Dam Systems for Bridge Decks
The purpose of this evaluation was to determine the field performance and effectiveness of using an asphaltic plug-type bridge deck expansion dam system in the temporary repair of existing deteriorated bridge deck expansion dam systems. Asphaltic plug-type expansion dam systems involve cutting out an approximate 20-inch wide area directly over an existing expansion joint and then filling the area with a blended mixture of polymer modified asphalt and a hard, clean, uniformly graded aggregate. Two (2) similar asphaltic plug-type expansion dam systems were evaluated by the Department. The two joint systems were the 'Koch BJS (trademark) System' manufactured by Koch Materials Company, and the 'Thorma-Joint (Trademark)' system manufactured by Linear Dynamics, Inc.
