Reinforced Concrete Strength Design
This technical release (TR) presents criteria and procedures for the design of reinforced concrete structures and structural elements by the strength design method. Design provisions attempt to ensure ductile behavior at ultimate load and adequate serviceability at working load. The American Concrete Institute Standard ACI(318-77) is taken as the basic reference. Adjustments and modifications are made in the TR to reflect the more difficult environment encountered by hydraulic structures. The TR is directed toward non-prestressed, cast-in-place, construction. It treats neither precast concrete nor prestressed concrete. The TR introduces the concept of environment class based on the environment encountered by the structure. Two distinctions are made in the TR, they are 'service hydraulic structure' and 'other structures'. Additional classes might be defined for structures subjected to environments that are more harsh (e.g. waste treatment works) or less harsh (e.g. typical building frames) than that of hydraulic structures.
