Powerhouse Intake Fingerling Collection at John Day and McNary Dams on the Columbia River, Oregon and Washington. Hydraulic Model Investigation
1:20- and 1:5-scale models were used to assist in testing and design of screen devices to more efficiently transport fingerlings into and through the gate wells of the powerhouse intakes at McNary and John Day Dams--both of which are located on the Columbia River. Flow conditions past submerged traveling screens located near the entrance to the gate well along the intake roofline were studied. Model studies of perforated plates attached to vertical barrier screens within the gate wells were accomplished to guide prototype testing at the McNary project. The results of the prototype tests indicated that the design would efficiently move fingerlings through the gate well and into the bypass facility; the vertical barrier screen design was subsequently included in the John Day Dam fingerling bypass contract.
