The National Park Service proposes that 372,700 acres within Joshua Tree National Monument be designated as wilderness, with a total of 66,800 acres proposed as potential wilderness additions. These lands are primarily in State and private ownership but are to be acquired. Beneficial effects include perpetuation of plant and wildlife communities, benefits to the regional human community, and maintenance of a consistent management policy. Adverse effects include diminished management flexibility and visitor use capacity through restriction of motorized access, and some economic effects through acquisition of private lands.
