Master Planning in Tanzania Mainland: The Practice, Problems and the Way Forward
The thesis is a literature study on urban planning in Tanzania Mainland with the main focus on master planning. The role, functioning and the success of the Tanzanian (physical) planning system in promoting the urban development and discouraging squatting as well as in achieving the general aims of urban planning - equity, efficiency and ecology - are studied from an urban planner's point of view. By enlightening the backgrounds for urban planning in Tanzania Mainland (urbanization, squatting, urban policies, land tenure and the urban planning system) and studying the history and the characteristics of the Tanzanian planning, especially on the master planning level, the major problematic connected to it is highlighted and finally the possibities for more realistic forms of planning in Tanzania are under examination.
