Cracking and Fracture of Concrete and Cement Paste
Crack formation and propagation were studied experimentally and theoretically for concrete submitted to static compressive load, to sustained load, and to pulsating load. Prior to first loading, shrinkage cracks were not observed in the cement-aggregate bond phase or in the mortar matrix of the concretes studied. A few well-defined bond cracks developed when the specimens were loaded to about half the compressive strength. These cracks propagated through the cement mortar matrix to other aggregate particles as load was increased, and they ultimately caused the specimens to fail. There was no evidence of gradual deterioration due to widespread formation of cracks in the material structure when the load was increased to failure. Stability of the cracks under sustained and pulsating load was studied. Fracture mechanism of hardened cement paste is discussed. (Author)
