Hospitals and Medical Facilities: The Allentown and Sacred Heart Hospital Center
The multidisciplinary approach and early designer involvement are discussed as factors in achieving the design objectives established for the Allentown and Sacred Heart Hospital Center, a 460-bed facility in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The design office, engaged during the earliest planning stages, worked with a nonprofit citizens' group and an investor-owned health care management firm to develop the facility, which represents a merger between a Catholic hospital and a general community hospital. The design office was responsible for all aspects of the interior treatment, including graphic and industrial design. All patient room furniture, lobby furniture, signs, and casework were custom design and later evaluated by specialists in terms of performance, function, and manufacturing techniques, as well as aesthetics. The primary objective of the designers was that the facility be 'humanistic' and relate to its rural environment. Wood, stone, and earth tones were used extensively toward this end. The hospital was constructed over three years at a cost of $18.7 million, with an interior budget of approximately $675,000. Early involvement of the design firm allowed plans for casework, focal lighting, finishes, and specified items to be incorporated into the architectural drawings and specifications, which resulted in budgetary advantages. Photographs of patient rooms, waiting rooms, and the auditorium are included.
