Assessment of the Significance of the Standing Structures of the Johnson Estate, Wappapello Reservoir, Wayne County, Missouri
An architectural and historical assessment of the standing structures of the Johnson Estates, Wappapello Reservoir, Wayne County, Missouri, was conducted by the Center for Archaeological Research, Southwest Missouri State University, for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Memphis District. The estate buildings are part of a proposed research - educational center in the Wappapello Reservoir Natural Area, and plans include renovation of several buildings. The estate complex includes a main house with formal gardens and several support structures. Historical and architectural investigations indicated the original main house structure was constructed c. 1917-1918 and that this was subsequently extensively modified and enlarged c. 1930. The estate buildings do not appear to be either historically or architecturally significant and they are not recommended for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. Recommendations were made for preserving elements of the plan and structure of the main house during renovation. It is recommended the project be allowed to proceed as planned.
