Hydraulic Performance of Pennsylvania Highway Drainage Inlets Installed in Grassed Channels (Type H, Type 4-Ft., and Type 6-Ft.)
The capacities of three different standard inlet grating installed in grassed channel by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation were determined in a grassed drainage channel equipped with adjustable slopes. The longitudinal slope ranged from 0.5% to 8%; the swale slope was either 12:1 or 6:1; and the other slope ranged from 12:1 to 1/2:1. The drainage inlets studies were type H inlet, type 4-Ft inlet, and type 6-Ft inlet. The gratings used with the type H inlet consisted of the standard and two proposed gratings. Each model inlet grating was built to half the scale of the prototype and was tested under several channel configurations and with a range of channel flow rates. The capacity of an inlet grating was determined by actual measurements, and thus the efficiency of the grating was obtained. (Modified author abstract)
