Fire Resistance Testing of Bulkhead and Deck Penetrations. Phase 2
The U.S. Coast Guard and the Canadian Coast Guard conducted a series of tests to obtain information on the passage of flame, smoke, and heat through penetrations in deck assemblies. Class A-O deck assemblies consisted of a penetrant passing through a 36 x 36 x 3/16 inch (91.4 x 91.4 x 0.5 cm) steel plate whereas Class A-60 deck assemblies consisted of the penetrant, the steel plate, and approved structural insulation attached to the penetration assembly. All testing was carried out by Underwriters Laboratories in accordance with UL 1479 Standard for Fire Tests of Through-Penetration Firestops. Underwriters Laboratories' 1-meter furnace was used for all fire tests. Eighteen combinations of penetration types were evaluated in 38 fire tests. Eight penetrations were tested for a class A-O rating and thirty penetrations were tested for a Class A-60 rating. Nine of those tested were insulated on the fire side, eighteen were insulated on the non-fire side, and three were only partially insulated on different sides of the steel plate. Keywords: Penetrations, Bulkhead, Ship decks, Fire walls, Through-penetrations.
