Bonded Concrete Overlay (BCO) Project Selection, Design, and Construction
This report demonstrates that a bonded concrete overlay (BCO) can be a viable and economical rehabilitation strategy for an in-service portland cement concrete (PCC) pavement. In addition, it provides a review of state-of-the-art methods and guidelines for design, construction, and maintenance of BCOs. The report first reviews the advantages and limitations associated with BCOs, followed by a detailed summary of Texas' experience with BCOs. It surveys Texas projects, evaluates in-service behavior and performance characteristics, and emphasizes the steps taken in the first 10-72 hours after concrete placement. Next, the report describes the criteria for selecting the conditions that maximize BCO performance. It then outlines the process used for designing thickness, reinforcement, and interface (a user-friendly automated process is furnished in the appendix). Finally, the report describes specifications, BCO construction control, and the maintenance procedures to follow when repairing distress on an existing PCC pavement scheduled to receive an overlay.
