Bergen County, New Jersey, County Comprehensive Plan Report: Recreation and Open Space Inventory -- Phase I
Bergen County's nearly one million population is currently served by more than 10,500 acres of publicly provided park, recreation and open space lands. The County's numerous municipalities supply nearly a third of this total 3234 acres. Bergen County, through its park system, provides another 4344 acres. An additional 2980 acres are available under state and interstate auspices. Upon these acreages a wide range of facilities, from small municipal parks and playgrounds to large state and interstate open lands, is offered. Privately provided recreation facilities in the County constitute an important adjunct and supplement to the public sector in meeting the area's recreation demands. In the private sector there are major land users such as golf-courses and scoutcamps which serve as important public amenities in retaining an open character in many developing areas of Bergen County. These uses also provide a significant potential land reserve for future public open space. (Author)
