This report presents housing characteristics for the Newport News - Hampton, Va., standard metropolitan statistical area (SMSA) taken from the 1978 - 79 Annual Housing Survey. The sample consisted of about 5,000 designated housing units. Separate data are shown for ''in central cities,'' ''not in central cities,'' and for the SMSA as a whole. Tables give data on general housing characteristics; indicators of housing and neighborhood quality; financial characteristics; recent mover households; and cross - tabulations of the indicators of housing and neighborhood quality by income, value, and gross rent. Data are also classified according to black household head and household head of Spanish origin. Maps and table - finding guides are provided. Appendices describe the geographic area classifications; define the subjects covered in the report; and present information on sample design, estimation, and data accuracy.
